The Dundas Real McCoys moved back into third place Saturday night with a 7-5 road victory over the St. Catharines Saints. Nolan Sheeran and Mackenzie Wood powered the McCoys to victory with four points each, with Wood scoring three times to seize the league lead in goals with 18.
Dundas spotted the Saints the game's opening goal, but Doug Clarkson, one of the newest McCoys, evened the score with his first goal of the season just 36 seconds later. Sheeran gave Dundas the lead just before the 10-minute mark of the period, sending the visitors to the dressing room up 2-1.
The McCoys extended their advantage to four goals in the second period. Wood scored twice in the opening eight minutes before Cam Fergus tallied shorthanded at 13:30, making it 5-1. St. Catharines battled back with two late goals in the frame to cut the deficit to 5-3 heading into the third period.
The score remained unchanged until 10:40 of the final frame when Aaron Smith notched his fifth goal of the season—the eventual game winner. The final six minutes saw three more goals: two by the Saints and Wood completing his third hat trick of the season.
Ryan DeMelo earned the win with 36 saves on 41 shots.
With the victory, the McCoys vaulted back into third place, leaping over the Cambridge Hornets by two points in the standings and extending their lead over St. Catharines to five points.
Dundas returns to action Friday, February 13th when they host the Wentworth Gryphins at J.L. Grightmire Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
